Sleep Apnea
When you woke up today, how did you feel? Are you commonly well rested, or are you often excessively sleepy during the day?
Difficulty staying asleep, attention problems, waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat, and morning headaches are all symptoms of sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a potentially debilitating condition characterized by shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep. Though this is a medical condition that can cause high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and impaired concentration, it can also be treated by your Santa Barbara dentists, Dr. Wipf and Dr. Aiello.
Those affected by sleep apnea often snore, choke, or gasp during their sleep but have no recollection of it upon waking. In fact, more than 90% of those who have it don’t realize it. At the dental office of Dr. Wipf and Dr. Aiello, we are committed to your total health. We offer the possibility to treat sleep apnea with an oral appliance and eliminate the need of the CPAP device (continuous positive airway pressure).
Often, minor snoring problems that lead to sleep apnea can be treated using a removable dental appliance (called a mouthpiece or oral appliance) that is worn at night to stabilize the tongue and reposition the jaw. Soon after using a mouthpiece, most of our patients experience immediate relief from sleep apnea symptoms and side effects and begin feeling well rested.
Dr. Wipf has received extensive training including a mini-residency at Tufts University for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) with oral devices. For more information regarding Sleep Apnea and the procedures we offer, please visit sleepwelldentistry.com.
